Syntactic Aluminum Foams from Selected Fly Ash Particles

Funded by the Ohio Coal Development Office and Republic of Poland

This joint Ohio/Poland project is to establish advanced light-weight materials that can be achieved by asking selective reinforcements to the matrix metals. Fly ash has been found to offer significant improvements to certain properties of metal such as aluminum. A portion of the project is being undertaken by Okilewnictwa Research Institute of Krakow funded by the Polish Government. Another portion of the project is being undertaken directly by EIO to use hollow cenospheres found in fly ash to create syntactic aluminum foams. These projects are aimed at assisting auto manufacturing in schieving Cafe' Standards by providing low cost light weight materials for SUV's and light trucks.
